Getting rid of rats is a problem that many people face. Wild rats are more vicious, dirty, and can carry disease and fleas that also carry disease so it is extremely important the problem is taken care of as soon as possible. Rat infestations in people’s homes are often from two different breeds of rats: the brown rat and the roof rat. Not only are rats potentially harmful to people, but they also like to chew up things, and dirty up your whole house. I am going to outline the most common and effective ways to get rid of rats.

The first thing you need to do is locate the rat nest. It’s not going to be very hard to locate if you are hearing them shuffle around in the attic of your home. However, rats most commonly like to hide in cracks and around the sides of your home on the ground. Even the smallest crack can allow a rat to squeeze through. Rats can squeeze through a crack that is only half an inch wide. You may need to get under your house in the rats crawling space in order to locate them.

This can be difficult to do and you may need a flashlight. If you are in the suspected area you will likely find the rat family in its burrow. Be sure to wear gloves and a mask when locating the rat-infested area. A good trick I have learned is to use a black light to locate rat urine on the ground. Try to locate all potential entry points and close them off.

Remember that rats can burrow under the foundation and even climb up anywhere in your home. So check ceilings for cracks, the attic, etc.

Once all of the points are located in closed off, the best way to kill rats is with rat snap traps. Simply set them with butter or peanut butter and listen for snaps. Don’t use too much bait. Once the snaps eventually start dying off clean up the mess! Continue setting new traps daily until all of the rats are gone.

If you are still having trouble getting rid of rats, it might be a good idea to get a Rodent Control Brisbane specialist to come and take care of the problem for you. Rat’s problems can be difficult to deal with so it’s not a bad option to see a professional about the problem.
